1. Introduction

Islamic Spring Retreat, an annual event sponsored by MISG, is a practical way to spread the Islamic teaching and introduce the MISG organization among the students. ISR 2003 is the second ISR event ever held in RPI, reason being the huge Malaysian student population in RPI.

2. Objectives

  • Make the students understand more of Islam and the title “Muslim” that we hold.
  • Teach the students how to adapt in the US environment while practicing Islam.
  • Building a stronger bond between the Malaysian brothers and sisters of RPI specifically and the Muslim students, in general.
  • Introduce the MISG organization to the students.

3. Theme

  • Theme: “I am Muslim, everywhere, anywhere.”
  • Rationale behind the objectives and the theme:

The theme is very suitable for ISR 2003 as it best describe our major goal for this event which is to inspire the understanding of Islam in the students and make them feel proud of being a Muslim.

Observations have made us come to the conclusion that some of the Malaysian students perceive Islam as a passive ritual and have the mindset that Islam is a location based religion (i.e. it is more relevant to be practiced in Malaysia because it is a Muslim country and not in the US). They have not yet opened their eyes to the wonders of Islam and Iman. This is what causes them in failing to see the US as a fresh ground for them to learn and gain Iman for the benefit of the Afterlife. With the closing of this event, we hope that it will introduce enthusiasm among students to lead the Islam way of life.

In order to achieve the goals, the ability to think critically and systematically must be accentuated . At the same time, the concept of motive and action as the pillars of motivation should be introduced so to open their eyes to the opportunities which are available to the students. In addition to that, the concept of being an “Everywhere Muslim” and the responsibilities that come with the title should be explicate for that is one of the most important “ingredients” of being a constructive Muslim.

As a result, these will, Insya Allah, instill the proud feeling of being a Muslim and ensure the preservation of the sacred religion, Islam.

Abu Dhar Jundub bin Junadah and Abu Abdul Rahman Mu’adh bin Jabal, radiyallahu anhuma, reported that the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, said:

“Fear Allah wherever you may be; follow up an evil deed with a good one which will wipe (the former) out, and behave good-naturedly towards people.”
[Al-Tirmidhi relates it, saying: It is a good (hasan) Tradition. In some copies he says: It is a good and genuine (hasan and sahih) Hadith.
